    Swing-away spare wheel carrier

    Hi there

    Did anyone build his own Swing-away spare wheel carrier ?
    How did you do it, do you have a drawing and can I have it too ? My dutch land rover friends can't help me with it.

    theres a bloke on here called crump, he made one for a defender.

    but that wont help you if you have a rangie a disco a 101 .....

    I built my own.. have a search of this forum for "swing away carrier"

    You will see pix ect...

    As for plans... nope.. on the fly

    If your handy with a welder and grinder than you should be able to nut it out easy enough

    Just to help a bit though, you can use a trailer hub spindle turned down for the pivot if you want it running on bearings but then you need to pin it to have it hold out.

    But if you want it to hold itself out you use bushes on a 1" shaft and spring preload it and just have a ramp for a block to ride over.

    I have built a couple in a past job but that was many years ago and I don't have photo's so sorry I cant help you there and I don't do the computer program thing all that well so I cant draw it up on this thing either.

    If you make it out of something like 70mm x 45mm RHS with 4mm wall then it will be far strong enough but not too heavy.

    We made 1 out of 2.5mm but it used to crack around the welds so it had to be heavily gusseted and laminated to make it strong enough to handle corrugations and wear and tare.
