When I was a kid growing up in the northern suburbs Craigie was as far north as houses went, we would put the boat in at Whitfords (no hillary's boat harbour then) and cruise up to burns beach where we would bag Large snapper, jewfish and Spanish mackerel.....oh the good ol days.
More of a hassle than anything.
Too big to deal with.
Rays actually are good eating,if you can get the italian recipe.
Caught one once, had an italian girlfriend, her olds turned it into a banquet.
It was half the size of that one,so a bit easier to subdue.

Great pics, they are frustrating when you think you have a really good snapper on. Even before Steve Irwin I used to get as much line back as possible and cut the line.
I once fished Port Phillip Bay near Canadian Beach and using a squid head as bait for snapper caught (I use the term lightly) a massive Eagle Ray that launched itself out of the water and came down with a frightening crash.
I didn't need to cut the line as it set off like a steam train and spooled me off in seconds. The boats around me were as shocked as me and I'm certain I was not the only one who needed a change of jocks !
