    Sudden Loud Noise

No, not in either of the Landrovers - just had a C-130 fly directly over the house estimated no more than one wingspan above the treetops.

About three weeks ago we had a pair of them flying in formation over the Talbragar valley (which is about 300ft below here) low enough that you could see the tops of the wings when they were in level flight. I am not used to seeing planes that size silhouetted against the ground when I am on the ground!

No camera to hand on either occasion of course, and in any case it takes too long to switch on a digital camera!

We have had this ever since moving here fifteen years ago - the worst was when we were living in the caravan while building the house - what we think was a F-111 came over at 0100 at treetop level.

Anyone else listening to Dr Karl this morning?

He said that the record for the longest takeoff distance was a C130 with ice skids in Norway. They were extracting a research team (and all their gear), and were obviously overloaded, and the air pressure was very low.

It apparently took them 50km of skiing over the ice, throwing out computer monitors and other non-essential gear (maybe a few PhD students as well ) until they managed to lift off.

A few years ago now I was walking into a fishing spot along a creek/river up the back of Lake Eucumbene,, totally fogged in, knee deep snow, and this noise gradually got louder and louder untill it reached "stick your fingers in your ears" level,, then SOMETHING flew up the creek BELOW us!! sucking all the fog along with it. The local with us said the F1-11's use the valley as a training run.

About forty years ago I was flying my Auster from Archerfield to Glen Innes. South of Beaudesert, flying about 1500ft above the ground (and below the control area steps) I caught a glimpse of something passing under me at high speed from the right - looking out to the left, I saw two Sabres in formation receding rapidly, at perhaps 200ft AGL.

Similarly, about twenty years ago, flying a Beech A36 from the Edgar Range near Broome to Port Augusta, and about 200nm from P.A. at 9,500ft , I was passed traffic of two F-18s in my area on descent from FL300 (30,000ft) to cruise at below 500AGL at 300kts. I never did see them.

Had a similar experience when hiking up some mountains in north wales (Glydirs). Down in the valley, at no more than 100ft above ground, and with mountains/hills on either side, harriers were flying through in pairs, VERY close to each other.
