boat trailers - lighting requirements

G'day guys

im just looking at the boat trailer and realise having looked at some ADR's that it may need side reflectors or clearance lights. does anyone know the rules on these? i cannot find anything that definitively says 'do this...' it being a boat trailer it becomes quite difficult to fit things like that on.

by the way i will be listing some LED trailer lights in the market place shortly as they have no rego plate light built in and i have no room to add a separate one! joy!

Hi, in NSW I believe you only need side lights on trailers over a certain width - as on car trailers etc. As for reflectors on the rear, these are nowadays built into the parking / brake lights. Also, you can get some pretty small LED number plate lights - about 25mm wide, to go on either side of the plate.

G'day Guys

I'm putting the lights, reflectors and tow coupling on our boat trailer this Sunday.

I also couldn't find any firm info on the internet about what was needed so earlier this week I talked to the Blue Slip Guy that I'm using for the check.

Specs on our boat/trailer are:

Standard 2.4 metre width dual axle trailer
8 metre boat length
1.2 to 1.8 ton (No Weigh Bridge ticket yet)

The tow coupling is 2270 kg unit with hydralic brakes and override.

All the lights are WaterProof LED made by Narva sourced from Coast to Coast in Sydney.

Stop/tail and blinker units (these are the only lights sourced from Evil Bay) on each side and Numberplate Lights all facing rear.

On each guard on the upper-outter-most position there are to be amber/red units.

Also required are blinker repeaters in front of each guard facing out.

Amber Reflectors on the rear of the trailer and in front of the guards pointing to their respective side.

Clear Reflectors on the leading edge of the guards both sides facing forward.

Red Reflectors on both sides of the rear (sometimes they are built into the light cluster) facing behind.

Don't guess the rules alter occasionally and for different width, weight and length trailers, ring the RTA technical people or talk to the authorised inspectors so you don't have to keep going back.

Whew, Narva LEDs,.... priceee. You can probably source the same thing at half the price.

Those are pretty much the same specs I have on mine except I also have to have hazard signs (because it is over width).

I have had LEDs, etc. on my trailer for the past few years. Excellent is all I can about them.

Unfortunately trailer regulations very from state to state.

In SA you go to one of the Motor Vehicle Registration offices and they will give you a pamphlet that gives diagrams and measurements etc. All you need in fact to ensure your trailer complies.

I (and others) have had advice from trailer/boating dealers and most of them have no idea and care even less.

I also fitted LED lights to my boat trailer also added a reverse light aswell soldered all the wiring joints then used the heat shrink that also has a glue inside it so everything is water tight.

Have heard that water can get inside the lights through capillery action via the wiring, same as oil for us TD5 owners

I believe someone else posted in a different thread on this forum that it is illegal for a car to run when keys are not in the ignition, making remote starters and turbo timers a no no.
