Defender 130 - 300tdi

Hi there all

I dont usually frequesnt this part of the forum but I have a question related to my 130 dual cab (300tdi):

I have been having some issues with the 300tdi engine running warm. The other day was a start to summer in SA far North - a simmering 37" I can cruise all day over 115KPH with the A/C on and the temperature guage will sit slightly over the half on the flat.......

When I point the car up a hill its a different story - the temperature guage will climb to 3/4 plus but as soon as you get back to flat country is fine.

I have heard all the war stories related to cylinder heads these engines - but I have been suspecting the temperature guage being faulty.

So I have fitted an after market temperature guage and so far 3/4 on the land rover guage cross references to 85" (so I suspect its the guage which is faulty).

My question for the forum is what sort of temperatures do the 300tdi engines run - or is there anything else I should be checking .

t/stat starts to crack at 87*C, my mechanical temp gauge usually sits around the 90-92* mark normal running around, or just below the 90* mark in the cooler weather, and climbs when I hit a hill.

Have a look at cleaning the mud, bugs and crap out of the external fins of core and the aircon condenser about once a year.

I generally do mine about this time of the year but I did it a couple of months ago so no need this year.

Means it also gets new coolant at the sametime which also helps against scaling up.

I normally just hose it out from both sides with a reasonable pressure hose, NOT HIGH PRESSURE as they bend fins and creat a bigger problem.

Good job for a warmish sat afternoon with a couple of beers.

I fitted the sensor of my engine watchdog to the thermostat housing. It was running between 75 and 80 during the cooler months. Now that it's warmed up it's gone as high as 86 (uphill on the highway). I'm not sure how this correlates to coolant temperatures exactly.

Just as a side note to type the degree symbol ° hold down the Alt key and type 248 on the number pad.
