101 high/low gear change

One thing I have noticed on my 101 is that after coming from low range and changing into high range it tends to jump out of gear again.
After trying a few times or holding the transfercase lever for a little while. it will stay in and no futher problems or jumping out until I change up from low range again.
The gear shift linkage is perfect and so appears the detent.
The transfercase is noise free.
The transfercase is the same as early 1970s range rover.
I suspect something may be worn or has to much end float.
What wears in these transfercases ?

In a Rangie or Stage1 the first sign of a re shim Job is a rocking high low lever, when you put your foot on and off the throttle.
Not sure how the 101 linkages are but its possibly heading into this region.
They will do it for ages but one day they will drop out and refuse to stay in high.
That's what I have seen in the past anyway

Whats involved with a reshim job.
Sounds like the problem.
The 101 will not give any feed back through the transfercase lever as it is cable.
Yes it is ,like it may not one day want to stay back in high range

Ron I was hoping Dave or someone would come along as they will know this better than I.
I always understood it was a case of shimming up the big idler arrangement in the center of the transfer and reducing its end float to a minimum.
That and reshiming the center diff to reduce its movement.
From what I understand it can be done with the box in the vehicle do a search I know its been discussed before.

Yes the shims are worn on the intermediate gears in the transfer case. And the joy can be done in the vehicle.

Well that's answered a nagging question - now looks like I have another job to add to the growing list of 'things to do when I get a moment' on the 101 Ambulance...
