    SIII vs SII

I have just found myself a landrover Navana with one of the local cockys leting me go lose through his stash of landrover bits. So far I have found about 4 SII in various states of repair and some sIII bits to.

In general what parts can be mixed and matched with my SIII tray back ie one of them has a well body with a really neat canopy on it would it bolt straight on to the SIII? Also also I would like to turf the ford motor and go back to land rover. I have a choice of 2x 4cyl petrol or a 6cyl petrol which was orriginally what was in my old girl. What would be your pick of engines?

    Cheers

Geez an easier question may be what can't be swapped.

I would have thought the 2.6 would be nice to return it to it's original state.

I believe the engine and gearbox mounts are further back in the 6. Provided this wasn't frigged with too much with the ford conversion it may be a simpler swap to put the 2.6 back in.

Having said all that, the 2.25 is probably easier to source parts for and is a lovely little donk.

    (Haven't really help have I?)

As Paul says, it is easier to say what can't be easily swapped. Basically the four and the six are a problem to interchange because the gearbox is further back on the six, and the bell housing is different.

Between the Series 2 and 2, the significant differences are that the windscreen frame (but not glass) is different, as is the bulkhead and dash. Apart from this, just about everything is interchangeable with some minor fixes - for example, the S3 speedo needs to have its own cable as the fitting is different, and the S2 cable is not long enough to put a S2 speedo in an S3. Door checks are different, and need modifications. Gearboxes are interchangeable, but you need to also change the clutch slave and plumbing. If you interchange the salisbury and Rover rear axles, you need to also change the prop shaft.

Short and long wheelbase - everything forward of the rear of the seat box is interchangeable except the speedo and the wheels, and the ute cab is the same except for an extra panel on the short wheelbase. Tailgate is the same as are lights etc.

In answer to your specific question, the standard well body (tub) is a bolt on replacement for the tray (plus the lower rear part of the cab). Same for S2/2a/3. You may need some bits that are missing like seat belt anchorage brackets if the tub is an early one.

if yours was originally a 6 its easier to put the 6 back in.

90% of the parts will swap from one to the other without mods or hassle and the other 10% go with a bit of effort

If you put the six back in try to find a 3ltr out of a Rover P5 or early P6. I came across a series 1 107 in the UK when I was there in 93 with this setup and worked very well. I was very impressed as looked original and went so much better than the 2.6 they should never have thought of in 1st place. They don't seem to burn valves as bad either.
