    130 Defender 1995 . no drive .stuck but comfortable

    Pardon the intrusion, bit of a rough introduction of myself to you all as this is only the second post, but being Land Rover owners I sure you will understand ,,

    I have today ,received a call from my friend who has lost the drive via the transfer case. He is comfortable with caravan near the beach, somewhere in Western Australia , so I recon he has the time to consider the options of diagnosing exactly what is wrong and then the most cost effective solution to regaining motion. .

    For my end, and for what it sounds like the problem is, I will be looking for a replacement transfercase, at mates rates or better, and advising my friend that that's the way to go.

    For from your end , consider yourself in the same plight , old faithfull finally let go in a big way, half way up a small sand hill that an oldie drives over with ease , it apprently all went in a big way! No damage to the case as my mate has told me but the old girl has no drive..

    It's a 130 Defender,1995 model, with another brand diesel motor, but that not the problem as everything back from the moter will off course ne Land Rover.Myself I drive a Discovery S1, I tell you it's a lonely road out there in the bush for an Australian Land Rover Owner, but thats another story....

    One good thing and that is that my mate has the net on his laptop, apparently, so I will give him this threads address to look into, while he finds out the pricy options that confront him.

    Don't want to be rude but it hasn't just jumped out of gear has it??
    Does it drive in Low Range??
    Is there much grinding and crunching when trying to drive
    I dont know if the 1995 models have the stripped mainshaft issue

    Your never rude when you offer advise, thankyou,

    all I know is that it just made it back a very short distance to the camp and has now, no drive.

    I will drop back-in to this thread,
    tomorrow about the same time and hope to read the thoughts of like minded owners who may have had the opportunity to experience a Land Rover phobia.

    I would of thought that if he had no drive but then managed to drive it back to camp that what djam said is a possibilty.....


    has your friend tried to drive the car in high and in low does he not have drive in either or only just one?
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    95 gear boxes did have the problem with the main shaft wearing. the shaft is the one that couples the gearbox and transfer case. the splines wear on the transfer case input gear. Symptoms are that you will lose drive in all gears including hi or low range. These shafts normaly failed early in their life (mine did make it to 165000ks) but obviously it would fail sooner with hard use. The easy way to check it is:
    1: remove the inspection cover from the transfer case. (round cover on the rear of the tcase left of the handbrake drum).
    2: with the hand brake ON get some one to attempt to drive forward, you should see the main shaft turning inside the small input gear.

    If this confirms the problem then you will need to repair or replace the main gearbox & the transfer case input gear.

    If the above is the case, (and it sounds possible)
    a fellow AULRO got themselves out of the same pickle jar by driving some concrete nails into the flogged out spline spaces, enough to get the truck mobile. Maybe leave the trailer behind to go and get the necessary parts.

    If this is the case, all your friend needs is a new cross drilled input gear for the transfer case. It can be easily changed over insitu with hand tools. do a search!!!! The new gear will engage on enough new spline to get the van off the beach but then I imagine a new mainshaft will be needed.

    Sorry if this arrives after the fact....hopefully the 130 is mobile again.

    If not and still parked up on a beach and a rescue team is the only way to sort it out, I was at Linn Rover in Kewdale this morning tracking down stuff for my 130, and they had a LT230 transfer box out of a 130, so the ratio's would be good.

    If your mate's beach is somewhere up north, I'm headed up to Karratha on Monday so I can give it a lift....send a private message or email us if needed.
