what would you build with 10 grand

okay, just say I had 10 grand to spend on building a truck that could hold its own in the mud, on the beach, tow a trailer of camping gear for a family and not be a pig to drive on the road.

what would you buy, RRC of course, but which model and then what accessories would you get? remembering the budget

oh, and the budget includes the initial cost of the 4x4.

looking for ideas from the RRC gurus

Range Rover Classic circa 1987/88 with 32" tyres. Detroitt locker on the rear and Truetrac on the front diff.
Shop for a Tdi300 engine to fit on the beast if you have some change left.
No winch is needed, remember that it is not a Patrol
Second option a Disco Tdi 300 with Detroit locker at the back only because the initial investment on the Disco is greater than the the one for the RR

I am not sure Pete. When you start buying accessories new, they soon add up and things can get out of control.

I was thinking along the lines

mid 80's RRC in stock form $4k hopefully with gas & bullbar in good shape
suspension lift $900
wheels and tyres 2nd hand $1k for say 235/85/16 on disco rims
cargo barrier $500
snorkel $450
body lift $300
detroit $1k
true trac $1k
rear ARB bar and tyre carrier $300 (fleabay)

and just hope that nothing goes wrong with it and thats about the budget gone.

if I can get some 2nd hand stuff then the bottom line is better but you dont see much 2nd hand stuff in Tassie and buying stuff sight unseen from the mainland and adding freight isnt really much cheaper/riskier

Built my dunga for about $10K just over includig rego, etc..

Rangie, 88 dunga spec 5 speed- $850 (baragin I say)
Tyres- $2550 with 16x8 rims as well (33' MT/R's)
Suspension $770 (Dobinson springs and Pro-Comp shocks)
Flares- $600
ARB rear diff lock and hi-tough axles $2700 fitted
ARB winch bar and Tigerz 11 12,000lb winch $1000 (bar was 2nd hand)
New Century 700CCA battery $210
Radiator service and 2nd hand clutch fan $200
ARB rear step $150 (e-bay bargain)
UHF radio- $300
safety cert and 12 mths rego- $850

I also got some freebies with the Rangie in parts that I actually used (needed 2 tie rod ends and a couple of bushed, so $0 )

Close but just over but you can do it cheaper esp. tyres now that I have sold them, I was able to get nearly a new set for the money I got for the MT/R's (tyres have gone up substantially in recent times). They'res plenty of good second hand parts , accessories, etc.. on here and other forums so bargains are to be had, just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Oright this is my deal.

I got a 98 TDi Discovery (300) with 300,000 on the clock with full service history and had one owner and he drove it alone most the time up and down the cost for work. So the interior was great and it had never been off road! and due to the millage being on the highway things such as the box and clutch are in great order! Only cost me $6990

It came with a Safari snorkle, TJM winch bar, engine imob switch and dark tinted windows plus the camel trophy black bonnet. I then put in a UHF radio for free. And a 2" suspention lift (dobinson springs and lovelle shocks) $900 cut the gaurds and fitted 31" maxxis bighorns $1200 for a set of 5.

Leaves me about a grand.
