Big 'Clunk" when auto v8 put in reverse

Hi all.. new to this forum and also a pround owner of a 96 Discovery V8i but when I shift the auto into reverse there's a big clunk which sound s expensive !

any ideas what that's all about ??

a driveline "clunk" may or may not be a worry.......

there are many threads on this subject that you can search on this site and maybe a nearby fellow D1 owner can look at it for you

causes can range from normal driveline lost motion (ie. it's normal), through incorrect/insufficient diff & TC oils, a rubber "doughnut" about to shear, diff & TC setup & wear etc.

I would check the following before travelling very far...

1. rear driveshaft rubber "doughnut" condition (you don't want this to break while you are driving)
2. rear driveshaft front universal
3. driveline fluids (type & quantity)

if the above doesn't find the cause then you'll need to look further (if it is really bad)

try a search on discovery drive lines, and in the discovery section of this forum there is a bit of information on the same subject as i posted the same question when looking at a 95 discovery v8 and it scarred me away from the sale i now own a 88 range rover v8 because they run a different set up with the drive line

yes Phillip, the "a" frame / rear axle balljoint can have this kind of symptom (also can be knock when travelling over uneven surfaces)....

....but I was trying to initially direct him into looking at the most urgent.......(ie. the causes (IMHO) most likely to cause further damage or worse)
