    LPG Installation Price Gouging?

    Hi All,

I've been doing some research on getting LPG fitted to my '96 TDI Disco.

Trouble I've got is with the price of the install. I'm getting quotes of approx $3.8K to $4.2. around Melbourne.

The TDI system I was after was a "manual" type like Eco-Shot as I've heard nothing but whinging (and rightly justified) about the electronic types.

I just can't get any installer to justify why a system that doesn't need to be interfaced with the fuel system, doesn't need any hook up to the cooling system, is an absolute sinch to wire up with no electronics, only needs a 25 litre tank and is tuned simply by changing a jet size still costs more than to have a petrol car converted to LPG.

All the parts cost around $1800 (probably a damned sight cheaper if brought in bulk) so where are all the other costs? By my reckoning about $3K is a fair price and the rest is just price gouging due to the $2K government rebate.

I'd love to hear from any LPG installers about this.

    Cheers,

    Robbie

Well all I know is a lot of LPG installers wont install Diesel/Gas due to engine failures and warrenty claims which normally follow quite quickly afterward.

Maybe they are quoting big to cover the possible follow up repairs tht they may need to do later because it pops a head gasket or burns a piston.

I know most of this is BS because most of the time DG is safe unless pushed beyond the limit but it is fairly new tech to these guys and they probably want to cover their buts a bit.

Probably doesnt help you much but thats how the industry works.

If I were you I would find a bloke qualified to do it but doesnt do mass amounts and talk to him about it, you may beable to get him to do it with only a warrenty on the DGas system fittment only and nothing on your engine ect.

The big places generally dont want to touch them at the moment .

Yeah, the same as Diesel went up 15 cents a Liter when the Govt gave a rebate to the transport industry.

Very true, about $1,000 more for a V8 Disco as I priced fitting one pre rebate and dilly dallied and got another quote less than a year later.

In the end we dont do enough klm to justify it.
