There seems to be quite a few second hand vehicles around now to choose from, have a look on carpoint or carsales, the rear diff lock, as far as I know has been an option from day 1.
Hi All
Have had a D2a diesel auto for 5 yrs and the D2 lemon before that for 5.
Lease on this one is up soon. D3 diesel is on my horizon.
Is it worth looking at second hand SE Diesel to save bucks?
New is still alot of money.
When did they bring out rear diff lock?

Centre diff lock is standard... The rear is optional.
I think the SE is good value. Also, make sure you go for the auto gearbox.

The S now comes with air as standard.
Antellope,
Do u need to have 7 seats?
If u dont, then u may want to consider a new TDV6 "S". This now comes standard with terrain response & air suspension. It does lose the Leather seating though. Nothing a good set of Canvas seat covers wont fix.
It is just an option.
There seem to be a few 2nd hand variants on the market at present.
"Rear" diff lock is an option when ordering. It Cannot be fitted later.
Something to think about. Just clarify if it has a rear diff lock when u go looking. The only way to tell is get under the rear diff & look at the diff. It will have a braided sheath & acuator at the top. If u look at one with then one without it will be clearly obvious.
Cheers & good luck.
I was interested in your comment about the auto gearbox. I am faced with having to change from 2004 defender to D3 to keep wife happy but be able to continue owning a "land rover". I was considering the TDV6 S so that I could get the manual gearbox then up specing it with 7 seats and diff lock. Is there a problem with the manual gearbox? Its hard to get in my head that not having a clutch pedal is a good thing
The TDV6 is perfectly mated to the 6 speed auto. The ZF box is nearly bullet-proof. Once you have a good auto offroad its hard to regress to a manual especially if you do stop start city driving and sand driving.
Just my opinion.
I hate autos, but the D3 one is excellent. I would not buy a manual. The engine braking in low first is great as well.
A manual D3 would have poor resale as there are very few around.
