    LT95 Gear slop in transfer

    Hey guys,
Just wondering how much slop in the transfer on the LT95 is within tolerance.
I'm a little bit worried with the amount of movement I can get out of the output flanges (without the tailshafts mounted up). Especially now I have a bit more power going through it with the 5.0 bolted up to it.
How easy/hard is it to take up the backlash ?

    Thanks !

Depends where the slack is - my guess is a lot of it is worn thrust washers in the centre diff. Confirm this by seeing how much disappears when you lock the centre diff. Other slop is likely to be wear on bearings or on bits that while not particularly difficult to replace, end up pretty expensive without a lot of result. Pull the bottom cover off, and see where the slop is. If it is due to play on the bearings anywhere, these should be replaced, probably not a terribly large job.

I did mine last week and found the following.
In my case it was best to pull it all down measure things up and then put it back together until I got parts.
I replaced the 4 brass (they probably are not brass but they looked like it) shims on the idler gear arrangement, this bought the end float from 35-40 thou to about 6 thou.
I then pulled the centre diff down to find it to be badly worn I replaced all the gears and put lt230 cross shafts in it (better design for lubrication) and replaced the thrust washers on the gears.
It drove like a really tight new one for about 20 ks and now it has loosened up quite nicely.
They are clunky and annoying but quite durable I also found all the bolts were loose on the low speed gear.

It wasnt that hard using a dummy shaft and 4 hands for the idler reassembly hope this helps.

    Thanks guys,
Looks like I might have to pull it out anyway with a flywheel balance issue So will be a good opportunity to pull it down perhaps.

JDNSW, you're right, most of it it gone when the centre diff lock is engaged.
How much of a job is it to replace those ? if it does need doing, apart from being noisy and annoying through town in traffic, does it really pose a problem ?

    Thanks,

If I was you I would remove the centre diff, remove the small spider gears and weld the large rear spider gear to the centre diff housing. Keep one cross shaft and weld a washer to it so the front large spider gear does move out of its location,it will make your rangie a rear wheel drive car which will eliminate hi percentage of your back lash. The centre diff will still lock into 4wd the same way. I am talking from exprience having a 383 chev 450hp in my rangie. You have no risk in breaking the cross shafts in the centre diff.
