A neighbour at work has a 1975 defender 90 with a v8 auto. Would like to know if this is standard and what type of V8 would it be?

Did not start the 90 until 1983 . Came with a 3.5 carb V8
But no auto from the factory until the Nas spec ( mid late 90s, North American spec , only sold in Us)
and the 50 anniversary 90 ( Uk ,1998) which was 4ltr V8 (the disco 3.9 but called a 4ltr in the 90, as it is 3.999999999 anyway )

As above - it is either a Defender 90 or its 1975, it can't be both. The 90 was not introduced until until 1984, and did not become a Defender until 1989. And as noted, the V8 ninety has only rarely been offered with an automatic, and neither automatic nor V8 has ever been sold in Australia.
If it is 1975 it is a Series 3 88, which came only with a four cylinder petrol or diesel engine and only with a four speed manual transmission.
It would seem the vehicle in question is some sort of a hybrid or extensively modified vehicle, and it is anyone's guess about the details including the type of engine, or for that matter what the original chassis was (One possibility is that it is based on a Rangerover chassis which did come with V8 and auto, although the auto I don't think came in until after 1975).

Larns who is on this forum has a 90/2a, he orded a 90 chassis from the UK and built it up, sal rear and rangie front diff, 3.9 turbo isuzu with R380 box and 2a body with 110 dash. If you can give more information about the vehicle like is it coil sprung or leaf sprung and what motor is in it or take photos and post on here, some one should be able to help you.
Thanks for that guys, I thought it might have been a S3 but he wasn't sure and i didn't see the id plates. He assures me the motor is a v8, must have been a transplant sometime. any idea if they are worth much? he was thinking of selling it. its reasonably tidy but i haven't looked underneath. He used to take it to Fraser island a lot so i would say the chassis might need some attention.
