17" Tyres

I know tyres are "done to death" here, but not a lot in recent times on 17" tyres. I am about to order 5 x Cooper 245/70R/17 S/T (Sure Track) for my coiler TDV6S (largest legal diameter)....partly because of the limited brand availability in this size, but mainly because I've stuffed 3 OEM wranglers, two on Gibb River Road and one in Snowy Mts. Forum reports on this tyre elsewhere on the net are mixed to both extremes. I would be thankfull if someone out there has some first hand feedback on the Cooper S/T??...or offer an alternative 245/70R/17.

Get the STT. Having run ST-Cs and STTs I find the STTs quieter onroad (really) and much better off. The STs chip badly and the ST-Cs don't chip, but I doubt are available in that size. STT all the way.

The Cooper Haters may now take over and explain why you shouldn't touch them with bargepole, but my experience with two sets is pretty good and I'd happily run STTs again.

The 255/55/19 is available (in fact, I have a set on rims for sale ;-) ). I'll ask GY about the 245/70/17.

I sent GY a couple of emails (Aus & US) a while ago without any response. Next step is to arrange with the local dealer to meet the GY rep, but not until I'm ready to order. No D3 for a while yet (hopefully early next year) so no hurry, but it would be good not to have to import them myself. They are available in the US in both LI 108 and 119 but I'd want the 119's. I found 225/75-16 MTRs very good on the D2.

I had 245/70/17 ST's and Exclusive Tyres replaced all 5 for me (prorata) after they chipped badly and lugs tore off from using them off-road. I requested the STT's in the same size and the softer compound has survived many trips and there is very little chipping compared to before. Unfortunatley there isn't much available in a similiar diameter as the OEM diameter.

I concur - I have driven around 75000ks on STTs in every kind of terrian from the Birdsville and Strzlecki tracks, outback NSW, rain forest, etc etc without a single problem with punctures. I used ST/Cs before and wasn't happy with sidewall strength - one serious cut (I do have ST/Cs on my D1 at present without problems) - the STTs have stood up exceptionally well. They work well on wet bitumen (for a mud tire) and are not showing any significant cutting or chipping of the tread blocks.

You have more thank likely ordered your tyres, but I am sort of going through the same thing wondering what to replace my tyres with in the near future. The current tyres on my D3 tdv6 S (coiler) are Cooper ATR 235/70R 17 and are very chipped but having just bought this vehicle I do not no the full history on them.

I like the idea of the 245/70R 17 size you mentioned and I have found that size in a Pirelli Scorpion ATR. Has anybody had experience with these or comments to make.

Many years ago I used Pirelli tyres on a series 2 short wheel base Rover and they were really good.

I had a set of Cooper HTs on my old D1 and did not have a very good run with them, worn out at 45,000ks no warrenty claim because I live in the country, they were only ever used on the black top and 2 trips on sand which has left me a little wary of the Cooper brand. I think their warrenty is a farce, 4x4 tyres but only covered if city driving?

I know a couple of people who have these in 16" on D2s and are very happy with them. I have earmarked the 245/70-17 for my non-offroad tyres when my D2 turns into a D3.

I have run a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATRs. Performance is good on all surfaces, but noise at surburban speeds is poor, and life is also poor to average. This was on a Santa Fe in 235/65/17, not a D3.

Anyone who posts here is unlikely to want to bother with any form of tyre warranty.
