I've read that early ones were set low. My '03 (bought new) has 1.34 written on the actuator as though that was the factory setting.
Decided to get stuck into getting some boost out of BlackBetty today.
The best boost I had seen on the Nanocom was 1.01 bar so time to play.
With many adjustments finaly got it up to 1.25bar.WOW what a difference, top end isnt much different but the mid range improvement is great.Guessing she should tow much better. She is now running in hot weather like she does on a cool morning.
Jimmy chased me up the highway in his 3.5 Rangie and was VERY surprised that a little 2.5 diesel could more than match his V8.
.25 bar increase sounds small, but it is a 25% increase.
At one stage I was getting quite frustrated that 3 turns did diddly squat I pulled the hose off and did a wastgate free run, good to see the overboost protection works and it was logged(3 times
).The limp home after is what BlackBetty has been like most of the time.
Worth messing with, why do they get so far out of spec????

Yes I had Rangieman
Yes I did get good results.
I have had the turbo off in the last few months and changed over to no EGR,fixed broken exhaust studs and a leaking manifold.Hadnt got around to looking at the wastegate again.
I did ask in the post "why do they get so far out of spec"
Messing with this dosnt still answer lots of questions why the performance varies so much and why fuel economy is so up and down.

No worries
Just wish the thing would stay running sweet once you get it right.
Im not the only one with a TD5 who is sick of varying performance/economy.
Fitted a new AFM also recently,so I guess that is another vairable added to the equation.

Whats a AFM, do I need one? I'm guessing you mean the MAF sensor?
Since I adjusted the wastegate for some more boost, I now have a stutter/hesitation at 23-2500 rpm on acceleration.
I can accelerate through the gears and it wont do it, it's only in top gear.
I disconnected the MAF sensor which stopped what felt like a miss at constant throttle but the stutter/hesitation remained.
When I adjusted (clockwise, shortening the rod) the wastegate I went to far till it overboosted and lost power then wound it back, could I have gone too far the other way and now it's opening too early
Do I need a new MAF sensor?
My fuel ecconomy has been pretty constant, 900 k's to 80 litres of fuel, not complaining about that.
Thanks Lionel
Hi Lionel
AFM/MAF the one in the air intake next to the airbox.
Mine has a miss when giving it revs in neutral around those revs but dont feel it under power.Always has, just put it down to it having an odd number of pistons.
Ive checked the cylinder balance with nanocom, there is a bit of changing of the values but not excesive.

Thanks Andrew, I wound out the wastgate some more, stutter/hesitation gone.
I too have varying performance, sometimes I think it's in our heads
Definitely affected by ambient temperature.
Question for all TD5 owners, how hard do you rev your engine in normal conditions?
I would not go much over 2700rpm going through the gears (manual)
There does not seem to be any power gains going over 3000 so I don't bother.
Dont usually bush it beyond 3000rpm.When testing it the otherday it was pulling hard to around 4200revs,much to the disgust of the young bloke from work in his Rangie.
No black smoke either, only a puff on gearchanges apparentley.
