    Freelander Handbrake

The trailing brakeshoe on the rear brakes on a Freelander has a lever riveted to it that activates the rear brakes when the handbrake cable. is pulled. This lever is riveted to the shoe by what appears to be an aluminum rivet which recently failed making the handbrake ineffective. I replaced the rivet with a nut and bolt which worked but now the rivet on the brakes on the other side has failed. I think I will just replace the brake shoes even though they are not worn much. The shoes were made by Lucas - of Prince of Darkness fame.

Any one else had this problem? While mine both failed when putting the handbrake on - they could fail when parked - the design (or at least the Lucas version) is a safety hazard.

    Cheers

    G'day Garry,

Sorry to hear about your problem. I had nothing (so far) like that, however my brakes were totally stuffed (due to lack of servicing whilst I was OS) and they leaked quite badly to the point where the handbrake would stick. Short stops (shopping etc) - no worries but overnight I'd have to drive off for the brakes to let go (with a bit of a noise).

Needless to say the whole thing had to be replaced (cylinders and all) before the brakes have shown ANY sign of wear...

And that taught me a lesson to leave the Flandie in gear, just in case something else goes wrong with the handbrake (not "the Handbrake").

I had all the work done by Midas - lack of work space and tools (all are in my SII still in storage) - and besides the Handbrake prefers for me not to 'play' with the Flandie....

This is the only issue I have had with my brakes - all else works well - only had the 3 amigos a couple of times and reset just by turning the ignition off.
