Who's got one of these?

Thinking of getting one for the Flandie - a bit tired of keeping shovels and stuff in the back...

I like them, but I think they are a bit over priced. I carry a full length shovel on with rhino shovel holders on the roof rack.

I had an axe-shovel holder on the spare tyre on my D1. Firstly the 4x4 Equip unit is a lot better constructed than the one I had years ago (different brand). I had a look at these at Wandin last year and this year.

They can be handy, as the axe and shovel are easily reachable but there are a few draw backs to these units.

In dusty or muddy conditions the back of the car and therefore the holder and tools get covered in crud.

The equipment is exposed to the elements (I made a canvas sack to fit over my handles)

It adds more weight to the rear door which, unless you have a wheel carrier, isn't something you want.

On the plus side they make reversing easier as you now have a very good reference point as to the back of the car.

I got one a few months ago. Yes not cheap, but it is really well made. I had a different brand before (which doesn't fit the alloy wheels, only the steel wheels on a D2) - and it use to rattle a bit.) (It's for sale!!)
This one doesn't. It is tight. It is lockable. (I don't bother though). It also has 2 screw mounts where you can mount the 4x4Equip extension pole, (or extension handle for their shovel) - which is a fantastic spot to mount your fluoro when you're camping as it get's the light up nice and high so it lights a big area.
If you're OK with the price, the product won't disappoint.

I carry a full-length, long-handled shovel in a modified rod holder on the roof.

Roofrack is kinda out of the question:
1. don't have one (yet) only cross bars
2. touring tent and its bits will take up most of the room

The rear door: should be OK with a shovel, after all, Land Rover thought carrying 3 bikes on it should be no problem.

Price: I am OK with it. As long as its good quality.

I need to get these tools out of the inside for obvious safety reasons. Roofrack is a fairly good option but not being the tallest bloke I prefer things a bit closer to the ground... and accessible to SWMBO. Shovel alone on the roofrack wouldn't cause much of a problem but I think putting an axe up there is asking for trouble.

I have the older sheet metal model - well made and should last a long time so I guess whilst expensive, you won't need to buy another for many moons. New one is improved (IMHO) and a worthwhile addition.
