    Low oil on a td4?

    Hi all,

New to this so please excuse any naivety! I went to look at a 2004 freelander td4 over the weekend, it had 120,000 k's on it and had it's last service at 90-95000. On checking the oil level I found it was approximately half way between the minimum level and the bottom of the stick, not good! However it still sounded ok and drove fine also. I have never owned a diesel before so i'm not sure if oil consumption is normal or if there would be a leak somewhere? Also, would having such little oil in the engine be causing damage?

    Cheers,
    Matt

I haven't come across an oil consumption problem with the Td4 engine before.
Did you check the level just after running the engine? If so, you should allow around 5 min for the oil to drain back into the sump before checking.

If the oil level was below Min, then I'd start worrying. Halfway won't do any harm at all.

Hmmm didn't really think about that. It had just been running so maybe if it were low anyway it could have been pushed below min...... I will have to check this out before I part with any cash...
