Footwell replacement, spot weld drill size?

    Hi all

I am about to tackle replacing the footwells in "Mongrel" (2A 109 5door) .

I have tried searching but can't find what size spot weld drill to use. I am sure I read about it in a post some time ago but am unable to find it again.

Any tips for replacement and drill size would be great. There seems to be a truck load of spot welds in the footwell section!

    Cheers Andy.

I don't know about size, but there is a special spot weld drill you can purchase. Is this what you mean?
It fits over the spot & not actually on it so it can be centred. It sounds "tube like" from what I can recall. 1/4" diameter rings a bell.
I'm sure someone here will know for sure.

Google for spot weld removal tool/drill.

a bit rougher than you blokes,
i'd use a drill straight thru the spot weld, or a chisel!!
after all it isn't an aeroplane, and it's just a bit of tin to fix it all.
but i do simplify things when i don't have to follow the rules and it won't kill someone.

    Thanks guys

Harry, I have drilled straight through most of one side and it looks like there are holes all over the place. There is a lot of bloody welds there! Did you just mig over the holes when you welded it in ?

I am not going for any you beaut finish on Mongrel, as the vehicle is a mix match of different parts anyway. I intend to make it a basic 5 door Defender substitute, to do a bit of camping and launch the boat.

I would like a shorty but I can't go past the galvo chassis under Mongrel.

Any pics or links to your footwell job Harry.

    Cheers Andy.

P&N make them. Ask a stockist for "Cobalt Spot Weld Drills". Available in 8.0mm and 6.5mm diameters in a variety of lengths from 38.0mm to 77.0mm. They have a centre point for location and the cutting edges cut the outside of the weld leaving a round hole on one panel. Not cheap and near impossible to resharpen without a special jig or a tool and cutter grinder.
