    My 130

    Hi all

    Sorry no pics as yet.

I picked up my 1998 130 DCPU last Friday. It was a total mess - coverd in dust and mud on the outside and in. I spent 2 hours and $30 at the car wash trying to clean the outside and underneath. Then I started to look a bit closer at all the things that needed fixing...the list is huge:

vacumm pump - currently leaking copious amount of oil and looks like I will need to repalce the whole thing....$$$$$
belts - current ones are just hanging by a thread
    headlight switch - no headlights!
rear number plate light - broken
Drive Flanges have been welded to the axles - so all new axles and flanges all round
    new rear ball joint
    all new tie rods
Rear Prop shaft has play in the splines
    new radius arm bushes
    new rear chassis/trailing arm bushes
    new tyres
    Rectify steering box play
Rectify free play in clutch pedal
Tub mounts are cracked and need welding
LH Front sill section all bent - replacement ordered
new drivers side front mat needed - ordered

and of course I need to service all oils and coolant.

In addition to this I need to install a second battery and UHF radio all before Easter Friday!

Thankfully the previous owner gave me the Landrover CD with all the workshop manuals, so I am currently printing out a few hundred pages of "how to fix all this"!!!

Will post up pics on the weekend... and change my avatar

    Cheers

    Hi Andrew,
Sounds like you bought the same one I bought, but I knew what I was in for I did have to add transfere case and clutch to the whole deal. Its all good fun and bit like a bottomless pit (sorry) but I still love her. How many Km has yours done? and what is the rest of the body work like?

it's done 192,000kms. The body is good apart from the rock rash on the sills and a few minor dents around the place. The paint work has been untouched since new. The section that I have polished has come up like new. The Defender stickers along the doors are peeling so I will take them off.

There was also some rust that I had to cut out from the door frames. Just surface rust, but was cause for concern.

It is still off the road at the moment, it will hopefully be back on it's wheels tomorrow.

    Cheers

Andrew check out the clutch I replace mine at 210 000 kms have been told this is pretty average life expectancy be a shame if thats the case if you got stuck having a sliping clutch or as what happened to mine I had torn the centre away from the outer part. Simply put I got in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a wait for an expensive tow which almost cost as much as the new clutch. Thought seeing you are doing so much work might wish to consider looking at this part.
    kindest regards Garry

I have a spare headlight switch. You could look at the headlight wiring upgrade as I have burnt out 2 switches.

Send a PM if interested, Easo.

    Hey all

Have had a busy time lately. Got the 130 back on the road last thursday, transferred the rego, tinted the windows and installed an air compressor and a second battery. Then packed it up and took the family to Moreton island for Easter. It ran really well. I was a bit worried about the skinny tyres in the soft sand (I have stuck with the standard size tyre) compared to my old 33 x 12.5 tyres on my Rangie. But never had any problems.

Garry, the previous owner assures me the clutch was replaced in June last year along with the timing belt. I have some concerns with the gearbox as with every gear change (between 2-3-4) there is this clicking sound coming from the gearbox. I also have problems getting it into 4th gear sometimes. I am hoping a change of oil might do the trick.

I still have heaps of little things to fix:

Replace fan belts - main one has more cracks then the grand canyon
Rear number plate light is still not working
    Rewire trailer plug outlet
Replace rubber hub caps on axle drive flanges - currently using race tape and wire!
Replace windscreen wiper arm adapters (rust has seized the grub screw and I can't adjust the arms)
Replace left hand rear door handle
Still need to replace the 4 main mounts the hold the tub to the chassis as the orginal ones keep cracking. The previous owner has tried to weld the cracks, but the welding is very ****-poor. I am going to fab up my own mounts from 3mm steel plate.

I can now also reassemble the winch (warn 9,000 pd) that came with the vehicle (in pieces) Spare parts have been received along with 30 metres of plasma rope. I am hoping to get this reassembled and installed on Friday.

Now I have cleaned it up and given the paint a polish and it looks respectable.

Will try and post pics on Sunday.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the offer Easo

I have replaced the headlight switch. I will look into upgrading the loom and headlights.

I previously used the IPF headlight upgrade kit from ARB on my Rangie and it never game me any troubles in 6 years so I might go with that again.
