Big day on the S2A Brakes & Gearing!!

On the brakes: (Brakes were pumping up and grabbing) Among all thje great suggestions from members I had: check the brake master rod free play...At first I thought yeah, yeah, check the brake master rod free play...thanks guys...but after a while it sunk in and turned out to be the solution to the problem with the S2A brakes "pumping up"...I tried lots of things, but it turns out that on your S2A you DO need to have free play in the brake master push rod or it doesnt let the fluid freely back up into the reservoir when you take your foot off the brake...simple but this has annoyed me for months...happy day! (I'm still planning to fit 11" brake drum system off a 109 [looking for donor])

On the gearing: Looked paitently for a while at overdrives and hi-gear transfer cases etc...yesterday got two RR diffs (3.54: 1 vs 4:7:1) and fitted rear one last night...went for the obligatory drive when I finished fitting it (late at night, what's wrong with having 1000Watts of flood lights in a suburban driveway while you 'fix' your landrover?) and oh what a difference, lovely and quiet, 100kmph seems so effortless!!! (and quiet for a SLR)

Fitted the front diff today...just finished the test drive...LRFWD still seems fine guys...feels like I could still climb a tree? Total cost for ratio change $150 thanks mainly to the very nice fellow who sold me the diffs.

OK so the RR 3.54:1 10 spline diffs are completely interchangeable with the original S2A diffs but they don't have filler plug on the diff, I had to fill oil via the diff breather vent thingy using a measured amount of fluid.

So today I fixed the brakes (yeah) and the gearing (yeah again)...I also got a Zenith 361V yesterday (probably suitable for parts) and am planning to get another soon and will have the carburettor situation fixed (my Solex has an issue) then on to 11" drums and dual brake master followed by re-build of spare gearbox and transfer case to add quiet and minimise (it's still british) oil leaks.

What a great day!...thanks for those who helpd me!!! Cheers Les

LOL i thought i was the only one who used 1000W halogens at night my neighbours must love me hehe. Today I sent basically my whole braking system (drums, shoes, slave & master cylinders) over to BHSS to be rebuilt so hopefully will be all good. I will remember about the freeplay in the push rod. Are you going boosted in your new system?

Soz to hijack but do you still have the wide wheels on that series chassie Blknight.aus? I am interested if you want to part with them

    S2A SWB & 11" brakes

Dave, thanks for the offer, yes please!...I'm in Sherwood so Ipswitch is no problem I'll send a PM.

Hadn't thought much about vacume boosted brakes or not, probably either would be fine on 11" brakes on the SWB...often simple is good...probably I'll take what I get Cheers Les.
