    Rattling that dissapears with handbrake?

On my '93 defender 110 I'm getting a relatively loud rattling noise at idle which goes away with a couple hundred RPM. The noise coming from around the center of the body (I think), not quite sure where. The weird thing is, when I pull the handbrake the noise goes away. Pull it softly, the noise just dies down a little but pull it all the way and it goes away entirely.

Any idea what's rattling about? Thanks in advance.

checked your exhaust for holes.....? or lose brackets

Edit: sorry never read post correctly in regards to the handbrake fixing the noise problem when engaged. So probably not what I suggesteed although it wouldn't hurt to check

Had a problem of similar noises and remedies. In my early 1984 110 the cable of the handbrake was resting against the underside of the middle seat floor cover. On engaging the handbrake this tensioned up the cable such that it no longer rattled against the cover, Problem gone with a big 'blob' of silicon and replacing the seat floor cover. Unsure if the '93 110s have a similar handbrake set-up. If so, check where the cable goes and what it is resting on.

Weird, the rattling in my car always stops just after the handbrake gets out too......

Yes, this was exactly the problem. Repositioning the handbrake cable made the noise go away. Thanks!
