I have a 1964 S2 that is not in original condition. It has had some other work done to it.
It has a small diameter steering wheel and10 inch tyres
The wheel has a special tube and bush fitted to activate the self cancelling indicator wheel. It looks the same as a standard wheel at the top in regard to fitting to the steering column spline.
I would like to fit a county or earl;y rangie steering whhel and not worry about self cancelling indicators and fit a remote horn switch on the dash.
My quick question is ; are the spline sizes the same?
You will find that your steering wheel is tightened and located by a nut and bolt through the steering wheel boss. This is incompatible with the later steering wheels which are secured by a large nut and locking tab on the end of the steering column inner shaft.
The later type was fitted from 1967 onwards and providing the spline is compatible you may well be able to use the county steering wheel.
Why don't you acquire the steering box from a Series III and fit that in place of your SII box. That way you will be able to have an expanded range of wheels including Momo etc and still retain the self cancelling turn indicator.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Thanks Guys
Hey Stage 1 , I think my 64 has a similar Simmonite wheel and boss.
The guy who had done the previuos work did source bits from the UK.
My other thought was to get a manufacturer to make up a larger diameter wheel to suit the boss![]()
