    Exclamation ATM Skimming warning...Brisbane City

Got this in an email from work this afternoon....and yep, it's reputable.

Police have visited buildings in the city to advise that Skimmers have hit most ATMs in PO Square, Riverside, McCarthur Sqare and Elizabeth Street.

They advise to check your Bank Accounts regularly and check that the transaction history is correct.

I'm in the USA at the moment and I am amazed over several things:

    1. They don't check signatures (my daughter has signed Micky Mouse), and
    2. PINs only apply to debit cards. I've tried to use my credit card PIN and they just don't accept it.

(I'm amazed about the really crappy coffee, etc. but we won't go there!)

Change your PIN immeadiately...the skimming machine is stuck to the ATM with DS tape,,,,,,you swipe the card.......machine skims your details from the card.....little hidden camera notes your PIN as you punch it in ,,,,Romanian mafia is nearby collecting all the info via wireless technology,,,then transfers your details to his colleagues in the Mother land who then produce a fake card in less than 30 minutes and withdraws your money from a Romanian bank...

To foil their little game all you need to do is change your PIN

I want to see a photo of one of these skimming machines. Each time I put my card in I have a bit of a look at the front of the machine for anything that looks like it's hanging off the reader. I found some. Anyone seen one of a local skimmer?

They are quite an issue in WA at the moment.WA Police advise that the skimmers obscure the flash lights on the card slot.Be very wary of any machine that doesnt flash correctly in the card slot.

I have seen a couple of examples. They are very very well made. The ones in the pic above are from a while ago. The ones being used now are very slim line and have their own flashing lights or some optic fibre like material that transfers the light forward so it emits from the device. Both devices were made for the particular ATM in terms of fit and external appearance.

The key pad overlays being used are also quite good from seeing pics. The camera ones are what I have seen. This seems to be the most common method of capturing a pin.

Skimmers are always attached with double sided tape. So when using an atm if something looks sus run your fingers over it and see if it comes away easily. Then look for a hole above or off to the side where a mobile phone camera might be capturing images from. Otherwise get into the habit of covering the key pad with your spare hand while entering a pin. Remember it is likely an offender will be watching ready to grab the skimmer if it is detected so the captured card data is not lost.

Skimmers were previously a problem when doing EFTPOS transactions, where a dishonest employee would skim a credit card and sell the data. The credit card data would then be sold on black market portals. That is why merchants went to swipe your own card.

My sister in law was in brisy recently, and they have lost a lot to these skimmers accessing their account (5 figures just). and yes, romania. they should get it back from the bank, but it's a lot of heartache.
