Modification to dedicated LPG....

Hi Guys/Girls.
I have a 87 RR with dual fuel. When I bought the car it was not running properly on petrol. It would crank over for a second and then switch to gas. No problem for me. I was told by RAA today that it has a delay system so it starts on petrol and then quickly changes over.

I just stuffed my second fuel pump and was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and just modified it to LPG only. RAA say it can be done but others say its a big no, no!.

Can I somehow by-pass the delay and AFM?


Any tips/tricks? I really hate the idea of buying fuel pumps every few months!

Hi, you will need a safety cut-out from your LPG fitter. Remove your petrol start switch system and wire in a plain change-over switch. Then you need the safety cut-out to stop the LPG from flowing on when you stall. If you are lazy you can prop open the AFM with a small bolt threaded through the side, holding the door open (you can remove it to regain petrol mode). A piece of 3" exhaust pipe works too. Also you can buy a VN-VS V6 commodore fuel pump and fit it , only around $80 trade, or second hand. Remember to clean out your old fuel if you do. Cheers

Thanks for the info! I just went down to the local mechanic and suggested this approach. He said that is a good plan and could do it for $150 and it will take a few hours. Cheers!

You shouldnt be going thru pumps like that, does the pump run continuously even when on gas ? If so you need to wire it so the pump has no power when you switch to gas.

Yep, the pump USED to run while using gas. I am having it run on dedicated LPG on friday so no more problems with pumps. Next will be a larger LPG tank for the trips away!

Personally i would keep it dual fuel and get it working properly so you get a better range with combined fuel, i've had 2 dual fuel rangies and could get about 800+ k's with both.

I would rather that too but new injectors (they are stuffed) plus another fuel pump just for starters seems like a big PIA. I like the idea of a simple set-up on gas. I could always change it back to dual fuel if I need to at a later date.....
