    Changing Coolant - Advice please

    Hi All

I need to renew the coolant in my 300TDi 130. Any tricks? Is there a special way to bleed the system?

I will renew the thermostat while I am at it.

    What's the best coolant for a 300TDi?

    Cheers
    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

I recently just had mine flushed by a landy specialist, and they showed me their way of filling it (cos I had to then put the coolant in after the fush had been through - I was changing back from the red OAT coolant, to green glycol).

In terms of how to do, drop the bottom radiator hose, and you get about 6-7L or some from there, and then on the LHS of the block (looking forward) there is a brass bolt about halfway down, more towards the front of the block, undo it (13mm IIRC) and that'll drain the block (6L - ish).

On the top radiator hose, there is a smaller hose that comes off it, and goes to the heater - it connects to a cylindrical rail that runs along the top of the engine next to the rocker cover - undo the hose where it joins this rail, as well as take the top hose off the radiator too.

I found the best way to get rid of all the old coolant and crap is to use a hose through the bottom radiator outlet, and keep going till its clear water out the top, and then some through the top to get rid of anything trapped at the bottom. Then use the hose through the rail that goes to the heater, and that IIRC will do the heater matrix and the block (the water will come out again from the block hole). The finally go through the expansion tank till everything runs clear.

To refill - attach all hoses again. Replace the thermostat and gasket if you're going to.

Take the small rubber hose that attaches to the top of the thermostat housing - this will let the air back out as you fill, and is the highest point.

Put in about about 12-13L of coolant mix through the expansion tank, SLOWLY (it is a very slow and tedious job filling it back up, but worth doing properly to avoid airlocks), at around this volume, you should start to see it coming out the outlet on the thermostat housing. Put the hose back on and your just about done!

Run the engine till its hot and the thermostat will have opened, and turn the heater on in the car to make sure its all flowing through there, make sure all hoses are hot and feel like they have air in them - they should still be a bit squishable, not hard.

Check the level of fluid in the resovoir and top up if needed.

Thats word for word how I was told to do it, and haven't had a problem since!

I use the green glycol coolant, and have never had a problem, have heard that the red one can have issues over time, and the green is more widely available.

    Good luck,

    Seano.

PS. IF the car hasn't had a full cooling system service for ages, seriously consider taking it to a radiator specialist, and getting the radiator out and rodded and a proper service. Its not really expensive, and its amazing how much stuff can build up over time.

If you want some pictures of the bits I've referred to let me know, and I'll go get some.
