Max 3000 rpm revs on PUMA

I noticed an interesting feature on the PUMA motor when I was on that test drive. If you just hold the accelerator at full open, it maxes out at 3000 if the vehicle is not moving, but if you are in gear, it can rev past that point easily.

I only learnt about this from a LR mechanic who pointed it out to me and said that this is a feature which was introduced into PUMA - the TD5 does not have this feature.

I wonder why Land Rover designed this - I would imagine this would protect the engine, I guess.

Have you tried the other end of the rev control? The anti-stall feature, just take it somewhere very, very steep or where you are likely to loose traction and have a play in low range one. It makes getting over rocks and towing an off road camper so much easier.

In an M3 or a WRX that is called "Launch Control". Foot flat on the accelerator, wait for Green, then drop the clutch. Long black lines

Can't see that being too useful in a Defender though.....

more and more diesels are getting this now.

Does pressing the clutch, while in Neutral allow it to pass 3k?

And while the wheels are moving the idle revs are about 850 dropping to 750 when stopped.

Why would you need to free rev it past 3 grand?. Pat

in case you take it to tuff trucks and camp in the bogan section....

You then have to rev it until your valves are bouncing

trust me I heard it ALL NIGHT!!!!!

Its called the governor.

till you load the engine up past its torque limits it'll keep upping the fuel to maintain whatever RPM you set the engine at.

and its not limited to first low... it works in every gear.

I'm sorry dave I know you have heaps of experience but I think you need to drive one!!

we did a landrover training weekend on all the newer models and with the club and they used the car to show what anti stall can do. And its unreal.

and yes all diesels will do it to a degree.......but I will lay my life down a TD5 can not climb what the PUMA can climb in low first tickover.

In saying that do not be fooled people YOU CAN STALL THE PUMA IN LOW FIRST.....the trainer did it to show us but it takes A LOT to stall it!!
