Check the uni's,there shouldn't be the slightest movement in them, also the bolts that hold the flange to the handbrake assembly. Pat

Hi all, this is my first post. I've just bought my first Defender and there seems to be an odd problem with the rear-end.
When I get into 5th gear at highway speeds and back-off the throttle, there is quite a severe vibration coming from the back of the car. When I go back on the throttle it disappears. I suspect it might have something to do with the rear diff or axles but it might possibly be the gearbox considering it only seems to happen in top.
Thanks,
Tom.

Go over it Tom and do the A frame balljoint, while your there nip up all the suspension bolts, lower links top and bottom and A frame to chassis bolts and then the front. They do loosen off over time. Pat
Hi Tom, mate that sound scared the **** out of me when it happend to my car, I thought the rear diff was about to blow up, and I only had it out the weekend before, a mate and I rebuilt it and fitted a locker so I suspected that we stuffed up some where so I pulled it back out to check it but all was good, preload was good tooth contact was good so I removed the cover from the transfer case and had a look and the intermediate gear was very loose on the shaft so I ordered a kit up and rebuilt that go for a drive the noise was still there, so I checked the rear drive shaft and the uni's where good but the slip joint had axial and radial play so down to the drive line place and had a chat with the old guys down there and they believed my vibration and chattering noise was coming from that small amount of movement so I had it rebuilt and no more problems now very happy. They said that these vibrations going through box and diffs can damage them so get it looked at soon and check both it's not cheap though it was about 450 a shaft.
Check the handbrake is not dragging.

Ok thanks all, I'll go over it as soon as I can and check those unis and slip joints as has been said.
