"Double sided" DVD screen in 2010 Disco/RR

I saw this in a press release about the new 2010 Disco and RR:

Land Rover claims a world-first with a 'dual view infotainment screen' for the flagship Range Rover. This alternately hides and reveals pixels to the right and left of the screen, allowing the driver and front-seat passenger to simultaneously use the central console screen for different purposes – while the driver is following satellite navigation instructions, the passenger can be watching a DVD on the same screen

    How clever is that???

Nearly as clever as the guidelines shown on screen when reversing that show the projected path of your trailer wheels if you have one attached. Or the 360 degree view of the ground around you which allows accurate wheel placement off road. Or the keyless entry and start up, personal mirror, seat and climate preferences from your phone proximity (and some other bluetooth enabled devices).

That I would like to see actually working.

It was demo'd to me in Japan a few years ago, but when I got in with the car in neutral, foot on brake and swung the steering from one lock to the other, the displayed did NOT change, no explanation given so I do find it very hard to believe.

As to the dual screen, I saw 2 different units attacking it 2 different ways, the first was using a special polarizing filter, but funny how one screen was unable to be seen when I put on my polaroid sunnies. The second was much more interesting, the filter arrangement actually worked, but the screen resolution was terrible, but resolutions have increased nowadays... I just wonder what the middle second row seat will see ? particularly its effect on someone who might be an epileptic.

It is a nice gadget, but will only be available on the RR, not the D4 or RRS. Have you seen the instrument cluster - all a big screen!

The passengers in the back get their own screens, so don't need to look at the one in front.

Here's a video taken at a recent show:

This is the first step of the system.

The NEW Range Rover only (2012/13) all alloy bodied & chassis Range Rover will have the full system across the whole dash, basically the dash from one side to the other will be one big TFT screen.

Will be very interesting to see.
