    transfer input gear

G'day all. It appears by the serial Nos on my 130s gear and transfer boxes that I have the one that does not have the cross drilled input gear. From what I have read on this forum the pre cross drilled gears suffer from wear and eventual stripping leaving one with no drive. Q1 Is it the gear or the shaft spline that strips ? Q2 Can one just simply replace this gear in situ without any major dissasembly ? Q3 My transfer box has a thomas PTO in the inspection plate hole , what is involved in removing the PTO ( It must have had a winch on it at some stage as the PTO is no longer used.) Just trying to get a handle on any checks or work that may need doing before heading into the remote outback unprepared. Cheers James.

Q1 - The gbox mainshaft frets out the input gear broach splines... they both wear out.

Q2 - Your input gear will be engaging on say 75% of the available mainshaft splines, a new drilled input gear will engage on the as yet unused splines (as well as the fretted ones) It can be replaced easily insitu. Remove PTO cover plate (in your case PTO) slide off gear/ bearing... slide in new gear/bearing and tighten.

Q3 - If you choose to remove the Thomas PTO drive I will happily deal with it for you . Shouldnt be a major drama, youll just need to find a cover plate with bearing etc etc... we could swap!

Thanks for the reply Steve . Will probably keep the PTO for the time being , never know when I may come across a winch . Do you know the bloke at the Endevor River Escape , Terry I think his name is ? Was up there 12 months ago and camped there a couple of days , nice bloke and he has Land Rovers.

    No problems,
Cant say i know Terry, but im sure Ill meet him eventually!

If you change out the input gear early you will have a better chance of not having to replace the gearbag mainshaft (complete overhaul) so definately worth doing.
