Hey Lewy
I don't want to state the obvious but have you been to gigabytes site & downloaded & installed chipset & audio drivers? Should be on the original CD for the motherboard too if you have that.
As per my other thread.i reformatted my hard drive, reloaded xp,now i have no audio,in control panel, sounds and audio all the icons dropdown menus cant be accessed except for those in sounds.in device manager there is a yellow asterisk over audio device on high definition audio bus.if i click on update driver nothing happens,if i click on uninstall i get failed to uninstall device may be needed to restart computer if i click on propertys i get The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver,if i click on re install nothing happens. i have gigabyte ga-ma69gm-s2h motherboard.

Lewy,
it's definitely a driver problem. The operating system, when it doesn't have access to the correct drivers, will try to load a generic driver with varying degrees of success.
The course of action that you need to take is to download the correct drivers for your chipset, AND the operating system that you are using. If you don't know the soundcard/audio chip offhand, crack open the computer case and take a look.
If your soundcard is standalone, make note of the manufacturer and the chipset (it's usually written on the card, and the chipset will be written on the biggest, beefiest chip on the soundcard), and download the appropriate XP drivers form the manufacturers website.
If your audio chip is built into the motherboard (which is more and more common nowdays, make note of the motherboard model number (again, printed/etched into the motherboard somewhere), go to the motherboard manufacturers homepage, and they will list all of the drivers available for the built in's on that motherboard (onboard video, sound, wifi, etc). Download the audio drivers for XP, and away you go![]()
I have done all of that, tried off the original disk that came with the computer, when that didn't work i downloaded the drivers from from the gigabyte website.they both get the same error message when i try to install. It seems as if there is already a driver loaded possibly the wrong generic one, also in add remove programs there is no realteck audio mentioned

Kinda hard to figure out without sitting down in front of the computer, but a quick look online shows that you aren't alone in the error message that you get. The proposed solution is below....
- Open Device Manager (Start> Control Panel> System> Hardware)
- In the "View" menu , select "Devices by connection":
- Disable and uninstall by right clicking on "Bus Driver for Microsoft UAA High Definition Audio":
- You can now install the drivers normally and without error.
tried that got this error,i am thinking of buying a audio card tomorrow.however this is pi----- me off badly
cannot uninstall this device because its descendants refused this request .this can happen if the devices descendants are required to boot up this computer.

Start in safe mode and then try uninstalling the drivers, if that doesn't work try removing the sound card, safe mode and uninstall. Then reinstall the card and re try the drivers.
