The system takes 13 ltrs.

Buy a RAVE CD (from the markets section on this web site - the profits go towards the site up-keep) and follow the procedure for system draining, flushing and refilling.

After saying that - even if you remove the drain plugs from the engine block - you will still not be able to get all the fluid out.

When I do mine, I drain out what I can, refit the bottom hose and the block plugs, I remove the top hose then run clean water through the system, via the top hose (and with the bleed screw removed) until there is no colour left in the waste water leaving the through the bleed screw, I then run it for another 15 mins (sorry about the drought ).

When I am happy its all clear.

I then remove the bottom hose (bleed screw is still out) replace the top hose, then put the right amount of CONCENTRATED (not diluted/premix) coolant (ie 6.5 ltrs) very slowly, I then top up with water (I use distilled - but that's probably an over kill)

This is about the only way of getting the correct concentration of coolant to water (50/50).

This thread is really started as a summary of the thread another OAT coolant brand

The Td5 Disco/Defender manuals stipulates you use an O.A.T. coolant. Use Havoline Extended Life Coolant (XLC), or any ethylene glycol based anti-freeze (containing no methanol) with only Organic Acid Technology corrosion inhibitors, to protect the cooling system

As many know this isn't a readily available product and so we have to hunt around for a suitable alternative. The simple answer is CAT ELC (part no. 129-2151) or Caltex ELC.

The following is a summary of what I have uncovered regarding the elusive O.A.T. coolant.

Havoline XLC is manufactured by Texaco-Chevron
Caltex ELC is manufactured by Texaco-Chevron and can be substituted for CAT ELC.
In otherwords they are one and the same.

Now in my case I could access the CAT ELC ($92 for 20L drum of Premix 50/50) without incurrring additional freight costs. The Caltex ELC should also be available to you and both are available in premix or concentrate form.



I hope this helps answer a few questions. Coolants aren't all the same, but there are also not that many varieties as you might think.
