Question Info on series 2a Engine

Hey guys im a newbie hear and i was just wondering if use could give me some info regarding the series 2a 4 cylinder petrol engine.

Just a quick run down with the whole story this is not for my car as i dont own a landrover its for my grandpop. He's had his SWB landrover for years and years and the last 6 its spent it in the shed as a mate of his started pulling the engine down as it was blowing smoke and moved away.

Now this is were i come in to it im a mechanic buy trade but a lot younger than this series 2a and want to help him out buy getting it on the road again.

    Just a couple of questions:
I'v had a quick look at the engine block last time i was around and it has really bad ring ridge. what i wanted to know do these engine have a dry liner set up or do they need mechined out to over size? just thought it might coz could make out a slight out line of a liner.

Also how good are the crank shaft as do they wear bad and will it need mechining if they are able to be machined?

The finnal question does anybody know were in Perth i could get engine parts for this job for a good price, trying to build it for as little as possible.

Also trying to keep the old girl original, as i figure shes lasted this long as she is.

Sorry for the long post but need to pick the brains of the guys/girls in the know.

    Cheers Brian

you might get away with a bore hone and a re-ring.

They are an unlined engine (one piece block) so require machining there are 3 oversizes available for the pistons and 3 oversizes for the crank. (you can go further but the parts while available are not common)

The engine is as tough as nails.

most times they start blowing smoke because the valve stem seals are shot.

Cheers for the reply mate thought that would have been the case just thought it might of had liners as there looks to be a ring around each cylinder just looked similar to the heavy diesel with wet liners im use to.

yeh and with the valve seals i would of started there but as the engine is already pulled down i thought i might aswell give a new lease on life.

will be good to get her up and running again also would most engine machine shops be able to supply pistons and bearings or would i have to sorce the parts through a Land Rover parts suplier what im trying to ask is how rare are the parts for these engines.

All i would be chasing would be piston and ring aswell as bearings as my pops already got a full seal/gasket kit he bought years ago when it was first pulled down and if anyone has done one of these engines up how much roughly did it cost?.

If anyone could help with a place to sorce the internals for the engine it would be much appreciated im in Perth by the way.

also sorry for the 20 questions

    Cheers Brian

the parts + machining for redoing my diesel cost me a grand. I did all the work but none of the machining. The guts of the diesel are the same (physical size wise)

    series 2a engine

it`s been years since I had a 2A but Landrover Spares in Blackburn Victoria were able to supply all the bits to reco. the engine.Reasonable price and quick delivery.
You can source their catalog to see what they have.May be a small charge.
They used to be very good in their service.

No way to tell if the ebay kit has decent parts. You would have to ask the seller what brand they are, and what oversizes they can supply.

    Options are:
    Std
    0.010"
    0.020"
    0.030"
    0.040"
    0.060"
    0.080"

I bought my rebuild kit from FWD motors in brisbane. From memory they only had 0.020" in stock at the time.

I have heard lots of good stuff about this place:
