    Counter-weight?

    Hi D3ers

I've just had the trailer brakes and Anderson plug installed and was checking the auto-elec's handy work and noticed a weight hanging from the chassis next to the LH exhaust pipe. It seemed that it would pivot back and forwards as the car pitched. I didn't check the RH side.

    Any clues?

    Bob

There's a thread about this here somewhere but I couldn't find it. Yes they're there as dampeners (I think). More knowledgeable D3'ers than me will confirm this

They are harmonic dampers, one each side, they are supposed to stop vibration on chasis. A real mistory item as to how much good they realy do

    Cheers

I got a thought about this the other day... I actually tied both sides up just before a run down the M5.

Yes, they work, particularly when over 100 kph !!

    Pendulum Weights

Saw a video (on another D3 owners web site) that showed just how little the weights do move - in fact you could be forgiven for thinking that they do nothing when you see that they didn't move at all even when the vehicle was driven over a normal footpath crossing.

I believe they are designed to "enhance chassis dynamics" but if the buggars don't move perceptibly then are they earning their money and why are they not standard equipment on all vehicles manufactured after they first appeared on the Land Rover products?

It was suggested to me that surely the chassis and drivetrain engineers could have designed the chassis so that add-ons were not needed, but I have faith in the LR engineers. It wouldn't be there unless it was necessary. No frivolous add-ons on my vehicle from the factory.
