    need help with engine,gearbox,transfer case and chassis numbers

    hey i have 3 chassis,3 engine 3gearboxes with transfer cases i went and found the numbers and they wernt all in the same place except for the chassis and gearboxes before i start / means with underneath
    here is the 1st one's info
    chassis=left hand side=36661493
    right hand side=15559
    engine 8250/x it it also had 212269/cbs
    gearbox=111302253
    transfer case=2/marshall/219467/upside down A next to that xx1, 266811/wm
    2nd one
    ch=lhs=36660052
    rhs=1398
    en=230755/ff
    gb=36106149
    tc=219467/v, pat no 233392/cbf2
    3rd one
    ch=lhs=36661487 rhs= didnt check
    en=e181922/ff/230755(might not be right) and it also had 200x on the head
    gb=36108332
    tc=2/marshall/219467/x, pat no 23392/cbf2

    what year models are they and do the gearboxes engines and chassis's all match up

    Hi some great questions. Rover like all car companies had many different suppliers and everything Rover made, including the engineering drawings of parts or whole vehicles has a part number. The numbers in experimental form all ways started with an X so for example part X12345 but gained a 2 to replace the X when in production to become 212345 or in later cases gained a 3 or a 5 and so on. Also when parts were made they often had build numbers or sequences so they knew how many had been made for that batch or just a running total etc. So more often these parts have extra numbers depending on the supplier or foundry that made/cast the various larger parts so that enigne

    36661493 is the chassis number, and is an RHD CKD 80". This vehicle was dispatched out the Grenville Motors on 15/4/53. 15559 is the chassis build number so that they knew how many had been made for production purpose.

    212269 is the rover part number for a 1.6 litre engine block and this one was cast by the CBS foundry. 8250/x is most likely the casting date which is what CBS did to almost all its blocks being 08/02/50. The x in this case taking up the space of the number mould which be bigger if it was cast on the 121250 (12/12/50). Dates on CBS blocks are usually on the top back of the block on the RHS.

    111302253 should be 111802253 and maybe a bad stamping of the 3 but is a 1958 S1 gear box. 219467 is the transfer casing part number and cast by mashall

    36660052 is the chassis number, and is an RHD CKD 80". This vehicle was dispatched out the Grenville Motors on 25/7/52. 1398 is the chassis build number so that they knew how many had been made for production purpose.

    230755 is the part number for this engine block a 2 litre and FF are the foundry that cast it.

    36106149 is a 1953 S1 gearbox and so on and so on.

    You should be able to figure the rest out. Now some of these part numbers don't correspond to the normal LR parts book as they are the part in its rawest form or from the engineering drawing. Once its machined or had other parts fitted to it and ready for the vehicle, it becomes another part number. I hope that this is clear and what you the info you were after.

    i did a bit of research last night and found out that all the chassis were 80inch 1953 mods.where did you get this info from

    Yes the chassis's are 1953 models. The one 36661487 was dispatched out on the 14/4/53 to Grenville Motor's. The dispatch info comes from Rover's own dispatch books. The other info has been built up over the years from all of us in the LR Register 48 to 53. Also with the 'model years' of the 80" don't run in line with normal calender years so you can have 1953 models made in 1952. 1949 was the best example of this with 1948, 1948 and 1950 'Model year' 80"s produced. I have posted a heap of this in the articles section of the Series One club forum.

    CBS Insignia on Block / Head?

    I've been searching for information on the CBS insignia on my 1963 Series IIa 88" (CKD knockdown model assembled by Pressed Metal Corp) and came across this thread. Was there a CBS foundry in Australia? My block has the full date cast into it + a light grey colour (like the holden grey engine colour). I've also got a lot of BW castings (axles etc) which my understanding was there was a big push for % Australian made at the time. Any info or knowledge you have would be much appreciated.

    Hello, apologies in advance, I'm a complete novice at posting in this forum.
    We (our family) are interested in learning as much history as we can about a 1955 Series 1 vehicle we are taking on as a project. So far we have the chassis number (the engine number is yet to be located, but we do have at least 30 years of crud to clean off...).
    We have decoded the chassis number but we are wondering if there is a way of using that number to confirm when it was originally dispatched and the original dealership it was purchased through? We know some of the vehicle history and who the original owner was and its likely it was originally purchased in Coonamble NSW (but Dubbo, Gilgandra and Coonabarabran remain possibilities). We are keen to put together and document many pieces of the puzzle as we can.

    The chassis no is 57661733.
