It could be the master cylinder or air in the line.

This happened on our car and LR replaced the clutch and the flywheel. It certainly fixed the problem.

How was the clutch just after the new m/c, and why was the m/c replaced?

My TD5 Defender 2003 model has just started doing exactly this. Somedays it judders like crazy in 1st and 2nd as you take up drive. It just started doing it one day. It's now got 173,000k's on the original clutch, so I figure it's due for a clutch job. I also think the RHS engine mount is stuffed which might also explain this juddering.

It's booked in to be looked at at the end of this month.. (the roof has also come loose - so it's getting that put back together again!)

My 200K TD5 D2's clutch is a bit jittery but there's air in the fluid line every time I bleed it. A kit is waiting for me in town next time I'm there and I hope it fixes the problem.
