Done a DiscoSteve

Not today, but Wednesday.

I left it too late to walk out to uni for my lecture, so I rode my bike.
That's ok, as it cuts the 35min walk down to about 15mins. Had a nice cruisy run on the M2, getting warmed up for the hills.
Then had to direct traffic at the lights to get a car over the induction loop so the lights would trigger. I don't know why people want to hang back so far behind a bike - pushies don't roll back like cars or trucks when taking off. And then she wanted directions to a business park, so I was helped out, told her how to get there.

Anyway, I make it up the next hill rather more comfortably than usual - making a mental note to do it the same way next time, and through the next set of lights.
Then I get onto the downhill side, and start picking up the speed. I last saw the speedo at somewhere about 40clicks, before I had to get on the brakes as a car blinks and merges into my stopping space and jams it's brakes on as the car in front of it turns into a driveway. I see I have about a metre and a half in front of me, but can't feel my brakes doing anything...

So I end up through the handlebars, with my face landed on the back of a merc. For some reason, I was thinking something rather like "oh no, not again".

Fortunately the merc driver was helpful and got me sorted.

Anyway, result is one broken nose, and a few scrapes. So really not into DiscoSteve territory, really . The bike's had it - handlebar and frame bent - the pics attached are of it after I got it home.

Of course, I missed the lecture in getting patched up and x-rayed, so that was a real productive day (not!) Mind you, it does make you really enjoy being able to do all the things we take for granted.

Unfortunately, last time I crashed on the bike, a Defender turned up at the end. No such luck this time though.

The trouble this time, is that the budget for a new bike is the same as for getting the Series III back on the road... and neither look likely as I spent what I had (about 1/3 of that) getting my HR licence during the uni break.

Could have been a lot worse though, But not much comfort with a throbing nose.

Is the bike a repairable right off?

heal up mate, at least you can ride another day!

Stick to growing ya Vegies (should be a bit further along for this time of year) and leave the bike at home

Steve would have gone to uni and then rung me during a break to ask should my face be dark purple with bits hanging out of it? And whycan't I feel my arms. He then would have gone to ER and been released in the morning in time to get to class again before lookin for his bike to go out training.

Damn bike riders!

Seems to me you are travelling too close and could not stop in time.

Don't know about other states, but SA bike riders must be some of the worlds worst. No wonder so many manage to get themselves killed. No consideration for other traffic users. One route I travel on they travel in groups and take a short cut around the wrong way of a roundabout and through red traffic lights. I could go on but I think you get the idea.

Sorry... but I reckon you are at fault.

Sounds like a classic case of the driver cutting off the cyclist to me. Sadly not uncommon. Cyclist have the same rights as car users on road but sadly have to take rights to near extremes in order to be noticed.
Hope you heal quickly Geoff, want to borrow a bike for a few weeks?

hahaha, yeah, Steve would have done about 100x more damage...
but I thought I was onto a catchy title!!

The bike looked ok at first - but as it's bent at the head tube (you can see the crackled paint in the pic), I'm not keen to fix it. On the other hand, I suspect the lady in the merc is probably more concerned with getting her rear bumper fixed up...

Mark - you're on the money - you know Sydney traffic too well - and thanks for the offer of a pair of wheels, but I'll stick to the footpath for a little while now.

Anyway, the scrapes seem to be healed up... just waiting on the nose.

i with you on this one

i used to do ride every day to work, 44km round trip, had a couple of close calls but if you do the right thing 95% of the traffic looked after you

council buses

i did break on road rule everyday and that was riding through nundah/toombul tunnel, i reckon i can argue its the safer option, other than that i always obeyed traffic signs and lights
