Starting problems TD5 S2 2001ish

Good day and thanks to all for previous good ideas, all of which I have used to fix my problems.
This time my Disco will not turn over some times. Perhaps happens more often when cold soaked o'night but not all the time. There is a clunk from down under and normally it starts to turn over and run after a few frantic turns of the key off/start.
Have tried locking /unlocking but this doesn't seem to help--just repeated use of the key seems to work. No lights on or anything out of the ordinary.

Hi Trackless.

Me thinks your starter motor has got KA FRITZ. What you are describing with the clunk (or click) is what was happening with my old 4Runner. Turns out the solenoid was gone. Just whip the starter motor out and down to you favorite auto electrician and he'll have it fixed.
