Threaded bolt head - heat shield

I was in the process of removing the heat shield to get better access to the wastegate assembly in my 2003 TD5 110 and have managed to thread the bolt head.

It is the bolt at the rear of the wastegate that holds the heat shield in place. The access to this bolt was either through the hole in the heat shield or from under the heat shield. I used 10mm socket through the hole in the heat shield and have managed to thread it good. I tried WD40...no go.

Any suggestions welcome. Perhaps the only way now just to cut the shield (or the bracket riveted to shield) to get to the stubborn bolt?

Also if this bolt is removed do exhaust gases exit from its hole?

Try a hex socket rather than a 12 point. If you have done this already you may be able to remove the other bolts and GENTLY twist the shield in the direction required to undo the bolt while, at the same time trying to loosen the bolt. If your sockets are worn dont foreget to try a ring spanner.

Failing this you may have to cut it off.

No, exhaust gas will not come from this hole.

I'm not sure what you mean by thread the bolt head. Do you mean you've rounded it off? If so, try a flank-drive socket or spanner on it, e.g., a Metrinch.
