    Power Pump/Alternator Belt

Hi, sorry if this has been answered/covered before, I did a quick search but couldn't find the answers that I need.

Driving along this morning I noticed my Battery light come on, thought that's odd. Then I noticed a burning smell. After preforming an emergency stop and popping the bonnet, I found I had snapped the belt from the bottom of the motor to the Power Steering Pump and the burning smell was rubber rubbing on the pully.

Anyway, I stopped at parts shop on the way home, and they gave me a replacement belt. I took the Power Steering Pump/Alternator belt off. Took the Fan Belt off. Slackened off the Power Steering Pump as much as I could. And struggled my ring off but after about an hour of cursing got the belt on. Now I had no adjustment left in the Power Steering Pump and when I went to put the Belt back on to the Alternator I snapped it.

    So my 2 questions are,

1/ What are the actual part numbers for the belts, both the ones that attach to the power steering pump.

2/ Am I doing things the hard way. I doubt it should take an hour to put a belt on?

    TIA

    Dannie

It sounds like you have a older v8 - read this about what my RR belts are.

Fan Belt part numbers and alternates -

It may be that the store gave you the wrong crank/psteer belt, so before you take the current belt off, slacken the three bolts of the ps pulley. When you get another set, it seems easier to fit both belts by looping them over the pulley off the pump and then bolting it up. Disconnect negative post of battery because when you push the alternator back towards the engine to fit the belt, it may cause the alternator strap to contact to ground ( big spark).
