    Batteries and bearings

    G'day all, two questions:
    I am looking to get a battery for my beasty, currently abusing something thoroughly innapropriate for cranking...

    I know almost nothing about batteries apart from I can maybe get a Caterpillar branded one for my birthday.

    What capacities are the minimum and maximum desirable for a shortie 2a thats currently petrol but will be diesel before the year is out I hope, with the standard generator? N70 is the size I believe, but I'm just using mm dimensions to be sure

    Second question:
    I need to replace a front hub. I have a second hand hub already, but figure i should replace bearings and seals anyway.
    Repco don't have 2a wheel bearings on file 9they do have seals listed though), so should I ask for a particular part number or dimensions understood by generic bearing suppliers? Or will a large bearings supplier have vehicle details on file, meaning I should buy somewhere other than Repco?

    I needed to replace a front wheel bearing in my Jap (2WD) work ute awhile ago.

    Ford - 80 +
    REPCO - 76
    CBC - 44
    other bearing joint in town - 40 something

    Thanks for the advice so far Paul and Dave,
    I don't have a credit card so buying local is my only option. I will seek out a CBC or similar and see what they have to say. There is one not too far away from me. Can I expect them to have old Landies in their books or will I need other data to help them out? I haven't found numbers in any of my manuals yet.

    The battery that you want is a N70ZZL for negative earth, or N70ZZ for positive earth. This will be adequate for a diesel engine. Caterpillar only put their name to good products.

    Thanks for that. I've sent the numbers off to see what can be sourced. I didn't realise there'd be a difference relative to the earth pole.
    There are dozens of threads on batteries on this forum but most are only interested in brands it seems. Thankfully I have that one sorted for me

    The only difference is which side of the battery the posts are on. The original earth strap goes from the front post to the front of the battery holder. The rear post goes to the start switch/solenoid. It is a good idea to have the battery terminals away from the side of the engine bay and bonnet support. Therefore there are two battery options so you can turn the battery around in either direction, yet still keep the terminals away from the side of the engine bay. Which battery version you need will depend upon which polartiy you wish to wire your vehicle.

    That makes sense, as I couldn't work out any other reason for there to be a difference!
    The vehicle is formerly positive earth, now negative, but uses the original battery leads and so forth. The deep cycle that i have at the moment has the posts to the outside of the vehicle, and I was a little alarmed at how close the bonnet support gets. So i'd say the N70ZZ is the one to go for to get the posts clear of fouling/shorting things.

    and if the are same as the one's on the Gold Coast, most of them haven't got a clue.

    Poor Repco they have coped it for ages, But in thier defence the staff are often young and inexperienced and 'trained' to pick PLU codes from the computer and if its not in the computer then it don't exist.
    Any way sorry for the hijack.
