Question petrol to diesel engine swap

I'm planning to change my tired 2.25 petrol motor for a good 2.25 diesel in my series 1968 2 A LWB - has anyone done this engine swap? I'm assuming the diesel motor should slot straight in and the gearbox housing is the same etc??? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

G'day All, In short it is dead easy, it will fit and apart from some electrical wiring changes including a diesel ign/switch and a return fuel line to the fuel tank +water trap in the line, go for it cheers Dennis

I think there was a thread the same as this a few weeks back. The answer, is yes, bell housing is the same. Only changes you need to make are diesel clutch, engine fuel and wiring differences, hose to the aircleaner, fuel return line, wiring and switch differences to the instrument panel (including wiring for glow plugs and fuel warning), fuel tank sender with fuel warning, fuel filter(s), engine mount rubbers, that is about it. Make sure the fuel tank is thoroughly cleaned. This assumes the diesel engine comes with all accessories.

Apart from the clutch, the drive train is identical. Front springs are heavier for the diesel, but you can probably get away with the petrol ones at least for a while.

its a drop in conversion you dont need to change the clutch unless your doing a series II to series III or vice versa.

the fuel system, throttle linkage, exhaust and electrics are about the only other thing you have to change unless you also have a change of engine suffix which includes the shifting of the radiator hoses but thats also simply a case of changing the hoses.
