Lt95 oil leaks

I did post this in the series 3 section but no luck can anyone shed some light please

Here are some pics of the oily gearbox looks like the rear seal in the transfere is gone and also the seal between the transfer case and gearbox (hence the hose)





Would these seals be hard to replace and would anyone know the part numbers??

neither seal is particularly hard to replace unless the seal running surface is shot. then its a mite more interesting but only in the sense that you have to replace a couple more parts that you have out already.


I can help you with the military part numbers but dont have my conversion catalog here.

i am lead to believe that the hose from the TC to gear box is a common mod along with drilling a couple of holes between the TC and gear box. apparently with out these mods all the oil can fined itself in the gearbox staving the TC.

as for the rear seal, seems easy will let you know after Saturday

undo the big nut, pull out the flange, pull out the seal,poke in the new seal, oil the lip, poke the flange back in, do up boult

The rear seal is no great drama, I don't know about the others as I've not done them myself.

There seems to be a lot of oil on the box that probably didn't come past the output shaft, how does the rest of the box look? My LT95 looks much like yours, but all the oil is now coming from around the selector shafts (having done the rear seal).

See if you can look at the top of your gear box through the floor, from memory you need to remove the centre floor mat section and lift the upper boot from the gear stick. with mine, the lower rubber boot was off from around the base of the gear stick and the retainer spacer was broken. This not only let oil get thrown out, but dirt in... less than ideal.

Heres the part numbers for the seals
T/case front output seal.........R571175
T/case rear output seal.........R622240
Mainshaft seal (g/box to t/case)...R571838 (get the metal enclosed seal if you can as they seem to last longer than the others). Also make sure you seal the distance sleeve that runs inside this seal otherwise you get oil transfer between g/box and t/case - thats why yours has the pipe).......Brian

Another comman leak is around the gear shaft the end of which is held in from memory with the output assembly. This is sealed with an o ring that is in a groove in the rear housing around the shaft . The housing tends to wear oval and lets oil passed.

adam my LT95 had the hose mod and I ran it for a couple of years before the box was replaced do to a different issue.

I had no trouble from that mod and it was easier then pulling the box out but mine didn't leak as much as yours appears to.
I cant really comment on the other seals but if it where me i'd just leave the hose as is.

The mod in my experience doesn't actually achieve much if you look at the levels its all wrong. This was a common mod for Land Cruisers of the era carried over to the Rover its not particularly successful.
One thing of note is put the main gearbox in 3rd gear when you remove the circlip and gear from the main box output if you dont and try to remove the seal the synchro may dislodge then you will have many other issues
