    Cost of an oil change on the Puma

    Got around to changing the oils on the Puma after the big trip and also to get the 15W-40 Valvoline crud out of the engine. I'd had to order a new sump plug before I could do anything a I didn't have a spare.

    Here's the rough cost breakdown:
    Diffs - 4L Castrol EPX $40
    Transfer case - 3L Castrol Syntrax $20/L = $60
    Engine - 7L Castrol Edge (comes in 5L containers) $43/5L = $86
    1 sump plug $8
    1 oil filter $20
    --------------
    Cost = $214
    --------------
    From this I have unused (for next time around)
    500mL Syntrax $10
    3L Castrol Edge $26
    ==========
    Total cost $178
    ==========

    You need a new sump plug with the oil change as there is a rubber gasket attached to the plug. Like any oil change I like to make sure that (a) I can undo the filler and (b) I have a bolt to put back in the drain hole. So I had held off until I got one. The old one becomes a spare.

    There was also a squirt of grease on the Uni-joints and prop-shafts.

    The rear diff oil was in good condition but the front was very black.

    One other thing worth noting is the oil filter cover hex head is 27mm so you can use your wheel spanner to take this off. How did they end up with that sensible a design

    Well, you're well in front of me. I had a to get a few small warranty things done (software patch upgrade and a couple of mods requested by LR) so I asked them to do the first service on it (it is now 2 years old).

    Cost was just over $600 The materials cost on their invoice was more than you paid for all your stuff!

    Cheers

    I had a service done in Darwin at the dealer and it was only $340. I haven't spent $600 on a service yet. Mind you I didn't ask Darwin to do the Diff's or the Transfer case oils as I was leaving that until after I drove in on the track home.

    Where are you getting your engine oil from?!

    In June I paid $79.95 for 5L of Castrol Edge at the local Auto Spare Shop down the road "Outbound Auto" and was feeling good when I found the same stuff at Repco on the other side of Adelaide for ONLY $69.99...Now I'm feeling ripped off if you can get it out in the sticks for only $43 !!

    I also didn't know about the sump plug seal and when I changed the engine oil at 5000km, I just cleaned the plug and refitted it. Now, after your post I went and pulled the 10,000km dealer first service printout and notice that they fitted a new "plug-oil drain" at a cost of $9.75. (Total service cost was $475...of which oils & materials were $211)

    Cheers

    I wondered when someone would question the price of the oil.

    The trick to buying oil is to buy from the local distributor. In the case of Castrol this is usually a BP depot. (not a service station) The distributor will sell the oil a LOT cheaper than the auto outlets. In my case I'm effectively doing the same thing.

    It doesn't get a lot of use. Only 6,000Kms after 2 years as I mostly drive the Disco or the 90, but when we go to the beach with all the dogs etc it gets an outing.

    yeah but I didn't think it matter when it came to warranty....I guess though if you can service the car your self how would they know you hadn't done it
