Dirty under oil cap on 3.9?

Is looking under the oil cap a good indication of engine condition?

My 1990 3.9L RRC Vogue is dark brown, 173 000kms.

On the other hand, my 1987 Holden VL Calais 3.0L is like new (ie aluminium/ silver in colour) and has 117 000 kms on the clock.

Should I be worried due to lack of servicing?

What is the condition under the oil cap of the other V8 LR owners out there with similar kms?

    Cheers.

Take out the flame trap and clean it. Its the thing screwed into the opposite place to the oil filler cap on the other bank with hose heading to the plenium. It will be full of gauze, I just wash it in petrol. If it is blocked then it won't let the engine breathe creating gunge and also creates oil leaks.

My 92 has 188KK and is a brown colour. It has been like that since I bought it at 76KK.
The PO obviously stuck to the 10KK change intervals which to me is too long.

Mine is golden brown in the valley and uses little oil and all the usage is down the guides so I wouldn't worry.
You worry if it is BLACK.
    Regards Philip A
