New TD4 question

Hi,

I'm looking for something to replace my Disco1 tdi and had a look at the soft roaders. So far I have driven a Outback diesel / Peugeot 4007 diesel / Land Rover TD4 E. I love the 6 speed auto Peugeot. This engine and gearbox is the best I've driven but $55K and a lot of plastic at the back does not look so good. Outback is very car like and I don't think I can hook up the trailer and go in the bush to get some firewood ( only have to do this 2-3 times a year).
The Freelander drove very nice and the car felt very solid also I was wondering where those 400NM are gone compared to the 380NM of the Peugeot it felt very different. The only thing I haven't driven is a Nissan X-Trail diesel. Must be a manual as the auto has limited towing and the gearbox seems weak.

Freelander was quoted at $46K and Nissan $40K. The boot in the Nissan is way bigger but the car feels cheaper.

It should be the family car and tow once or twice a year the 1t camper trailer and a few times getting wood or gravel or something. I'm just wondering about problems and lifetime of the Land Rover. The Nissan is $5K cheaper and re sale value might be better as well. Won't be able to drive a Nissan as there are no diesels at the dealer and I have only a few days left to buy a car (tax break).

I know this is a Land Rover forum and you can't say anything good about the Nissan but I'm interested in your expirience with the Freelander.

Something wrong with the price of the Freelander - more like $55K - $65K on the road.

No. $46K for the TD4_E, list price is $51K (manual only) SE would be around $56K

I have had my white TD4 SE (with sunroof) for 2 months now. Having owned 7 previous Land Rovers including Series 1,2 &3, 3 Range Rovers and the last one a Discovery V8, I was a little concerned about downsizing (especially to my first diesel). So far it's all positive; great performance and handling; quiet (for a diesel); comfortable. Off road ability was the reason for not choosing an audi or X3 (apart from the price/equipment level difference) ; the LR2 is roomy and will tow my 16' caravan. It ticked all the boxes for me. The Nissan and Outlander weren't in the mix because of tow capacity and noise levels. Peugeot is an outlander in disguise as far as I can see. Not sure what you mean re auto being weak; I tow every week and I wouldn't have a manual in a fit; the 6 speed FL2 auto is brilliant. Of course it had nothing to do with the fact that I just like Land Rovers.....I know it's a sickness Resale value seems always to be an issue with LR's but I'm prepared to wear that for all the above reasons. Buy a FL2 for goodnes sake!

The Peugeot auto was the best I've ever driven. It shifts gears at 1500rpm and the car just PULLS like a train.
After spending most of my time at the moment reading about the different cars I will throw the Mitsubishi Challenger in the mix. Ladder frame, Triton 2.5L only 5 speed but all reviews seem really good. Not sure about the pricing. Problem will be to drive one in the next few days as I'm sure there is non in Tassie.

Hi Matt,

If you are looking at a Freloader, then the FL2 is about the best one so far by a long way. Plenty of happy FL2 owners on here, even been up the cape IIRC!

Can I look at your SRS after the holidays? I'm back on the 4th.

The 2 reviews i've read on the challenger both picked up on the engine/transmission noise levels, some 'flaring' on gear changes and road noise in cabin. Equipment levels are good though and they look pretty. IMHO diesel mitsubishi's seem a little agricultural. My son has an Pajero NS Exceed and it is far noisier (engine and road noise) than the FL2 TD4.
Maybe peugeot have done more work on noise levels in the 4007.

As long as it's not as agricultural as the new Defender I drove on the weekend ;-)
Liked the fact of low range on the Challender and that it's much bigger. Will it be better with noise as the tdi Disco.
If I have 1.5t on the back of the Freelander and stop in my steep driveway to open the gate how do you get it going again ? ( Maybe I should leave the gate open ;-) )

I forgot to say my other son has a TD5 defender.....now that IS agricultural.(sorry 'fender lovers). As far as having low range... I tried our 1600 kg van on the back of the FL2 last week...no problems from a standing start up our fairly steep drive. Pulled better than the D2 v8; not sure about highway overtaking speeds yet.
