Thread: Legal limit up top?

    Legal limit up top?

How much are you allowed to put on top of a puma?
I have a Hannibal full rack and awning. Next on the wish list is the Hannibal tent. It alone is 90kg. Forgotten the weight of rack plus awning, will have to find that out.
Just wanting to stay within legal limits for safety and insurance sake.

    Thanks
    Kenley

I'm not to sure about the Puma but the previous defenders had a limit of 130kg on road and 30-50 kg off road....

I'm fairly sure that's what the go was.... however this is whilst the car is moving, obviously the rails can handle a larger weight when the vehicle is stationary. So sleeping in the tent is fine, however... i dont know what the maximum you can put in the tent is however i would assume that it could take 300kg... ie. tent, rack, 2 people

Series Vehicles in the 70s and 80s had more than 300 Kg on the roof under Overland Conditions.
Conditions that I would suspect few of us see today I know Series Vehicles well but know nothing of the later stuff just expect breakages and reinforce where neccessary.
I guess its a different world today with insurance companies, registration authorities, I guess the advent of coil springs didnt help either.

MMM 75kg. Theres going to be an awfull lot of overloaded vehicles out there. I was thinking more 200-300kgs.
Even with my roof bars and awning there would be 30kgs, then the kayaks at around 50kg each and their racks at 5kgs puts me at135kgs plus. Handles it easily but is it leagal?????
See so many with boats on the roof. What does a 12ft tinny weigh?

    12'tiny around 70kg-depend on make & model.
Was picking up lenghts of steel the other day and saw poster stating 100kg, I think, max on roof(including tradesman type racks on utes). This was at Metalcorp & they're big on OH&S-wont load you .I don't know wether this was a BHP thing or NSW RTA

Guess what? Puma roof is rated to 150kg This is twice that of the Tdi which is listed as 75kg in the owner's handbook (page 71)

See page from owner's handbook, page 73 (attached)

Pity LR can't make up their mind. In the 2009 Defender brochure, it's listed as 75kg for all models (page 43)

(Apologies for size - it says 75kg for all models, roof of ladder racks)

Can we be naive and pretend that's the first time LR has done something like this

Strange how 75kg is the weight listed in the Tdi owner's handbook and also on the website. Now why would the 2008 Handbook be different given there's no significant change in the body for a long time
