We stayed at the Discovery van park. Big, dusty, expensive but well equipped. Everything in Longeach was expensive and we were there at peak season with limited available accommodation.

    yep, can reccomend gold coast.
was in longreach last weekend, hot, sand flies are beserk at the moment due the floods, a lot of midge breeding grounds due the water lying around.
    take large cans of repellant.
sorry, cannot coment on accomodation, was put up in a private home.
watch out for cops, the town has a large station, and they are very active,
do not drink drive or speed, you will be caught
i can recommend the longreach club for a steak, and the qantas museum does a nice lunch .
did i mention it was hot, and humid due to the flood water.

I'd stay at Ilfracombe and just "commute" as it were to Longreach(27kms) much nicer and would be a lot cheaper too.

Are you planning on camping? Otherwise there are still about nine pubs in Longreach all of which rent rooms fairly economically and like cash. The motels are the usual overpriced cement cell blocks.

Large police station is correct. Longreach has its own police station, the HQ of the Stock Squad, a commissioned officer's premises and his staff, plus a training school for country policing. Last I heard there were 80 wallopers there. I imagine half of them would be standing around with fine books and breathalysers in hand waiting for an opportunity.

The insects would be fierce after the rains and it has been bloody hot right across the north and central west.

We stayed in that big caravan park in May last year. The facilities there are good - if camping get one of the grassy sites near the office much better - they've also got about 30 cabins if that's what you're after but no atmosphere, there's another lot of nicer looking cabins with nice gardens I saw on the walk down to Qantas. ( Aussie Betta Cabins ) ). It's all within easy walking distance of the Hall of Fame and Qantas Discovery centre. ( you HAVE to go to the Qantas Centre and make sure you do the tour of the 747 and the 707 -the Stockmans Hall of Fame I was actually quite disappointed with )

Try wotif see wots on there maybe.

I guess I was disappointed last September when I went to the big caravan park, because I thought that they could do much better. It was 45C and there were no shady sites in the area we were in but the pool was clean and welcome.
It rubbed it in when we went past the Stockmans etc and saw the extensive trees they had planted.

The year before we stayed in the small caravan park and it was like George St in the rush hour. We were put near the facilities and we had a guy in a van with prostate trouble nearby who opened and closed the sliding door noisily all night. On the plus side they had entertainment via an old guy who sang self composed songs.

When we drove past Ilfachome the van park was chockers and right on the main road, which both the others are not.

On balance we thought the best of three average options was the big caravan park. In future we will avoid all if possible.
    Regards Philip A
