    Troubiling reputation ?

    Hey guys

I'm considering a purchase of a 2001 LAND ROVER FREELANDER MY2001 SE . I have come across alot of bad press about coolent leaks, transmition breakdowns and over charging / incompetence with LR dealers and servicing. Is this a masive problem or just the gathering of disgruntled owners with common bad luck?

I love the car, it drove well and if I had not read the blogs ect , I would have bought this today.

The car has 226,000 on the clock and has had a new transmission put in 3 months ago. Car runs well and looks gr8 and is very clean all over.

    what do you's all think

ps should get it for about $8500

    pls help me out guys

    New to Freelander

    thanks

    Is it petrol or diesel?
Most trouble with freelanders is around the K series petrol engine K1.8 & KV6. The diesels are near bulletproof.
Auto transmissions gave trouble early due to a wiring fault in the gear box and were changed regularly. there was a campaign by Land Rover to change wiring in the Auto so it should of been done.

not as bad as you're being led to believe. I'll back all of what was said by woko and add that theres also some hassle with the IRD BUT with such a high KM unit its either already been sorted or its not going to give hassles.

if you check the forum with the search function you'll get a heap of info on how to check for what.

    Ditto...

Avoid the petrol engines (Mind you, with that sort of mileage, I'd doubt if it was the petrol anyway. )

As for the IRD, the 2001 model year should be fine. 2000 was when they changed the ratios and pretty much cured the issues.

FWIW - TD4 Auto is the one to go for.

...as the others already stated above. There are a few troubles that can turn up, mostly connected to faulty sensors, which are easily replaced and not too expensive. Plenty of info available on this.
After some initial scepticism I consider the Freelander a trusty and worthy vehicle now.

    Cheers
